At least 6 people including a woman and her son have lost their lives in a cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.
Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in the hills of Uttarakhand, washing away houses, cowsheds and bridges besides destroying crops.
A house collapse was caught on camera as flash flood hit Vikas Khand Ghat’s Lankhi village in Chamoli. A State Disaster Response Force team has been rushed to the spot for rescue operation.
A cloudburst flattened a house in Tharti village of Tehri district in the wee hours of Friday, killing a 30-year-old woman and her six-year-old son, sub-divisional magistrate Shiv Charan Dwivedi said.
The cloudburst caused heavy damage in Bhilangana block of the district breaching Moolgarh-Tharti motor road as a 20-metre portion broke off and went down into the flooded Nailchami stream.
Rescue operation by SDRF personnel is underway in the area.
Earlier on Friday, a woman and her seven-year-old daughter were swept away in Chamoli district early on Friday after a flooded rivulet inundated their home following heavy rain which also destroyed crops besides damaging 12 houses and cowsheds.
Muddy waters of the flooded Ulangara rivulet swamped around a dozen houses and cowsheds in Faldia village burying alive livestock.
Heavy showers have also caused large-scale damage to crops in Faldia, Vaganmaira, Padmalla and Nailpatta villages.
Heavy rains also blocked Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway at Lambagad and several other places causing inconvenience to pilgrims going to the Himalayan temple as well as those returning from there.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places especially in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri districts in Uttarakhand from 13 August to 16 August.
